Ergo Loom
Meridian's artisan and tech district. Where creativity and criminality share workshop space. The one part of the city that still feels like something is being built rather than simply managed.
Overview
Ergo Loom occupies the lower left quadrant of Meridian, between the commercial density of Nexus and the industrial waterfront of The Docks. It is the city's artisan and technology district, home to independent workshops, academic enclaves, and the fringe technicians who work in the space between Anima Dynamics' regulated economy and the raw, unfiltered underground. It is also the one district in Meridian where the gap between corporate reality and actual life is navigated through creativity rather than survival alone.
The district is not wealthy. It is not safe. But it has a quality the rest of Meridian lacks: the sense that the people here chose to be here, rather than ending up here by default.
Atmosphere and sensory detail
Ergo Loom is a different kind of quiet from the rest of Meridian. Not the drugged silence of a Morpheum parlour or the dead weight of The Docks at three in the morning. Here the quiet hums, alive with the low-frequency energy of thought and work. The air smells of ozone from plasma conduits, hot solder, and the dry, faintly comforting scent of old materials and well-used equipment.
The buildings are smaller here, pressed together in organic clusters rather than the geometric towers of Nexus or the monolithic spires of Zenith. Workshop windows leak warm light at all hours. The street grid is irregular, a consequence of the district having grown through use rather than planning. The mag-train lines that dominate Nexus thin out here. Foot traffic is dense in the commercial pockets and sparse in the workshop warrens.
At night Ergo Loom is one of the few places in Meridian where the neon is incidental rather than architectural. Light comes from workshop interiors, from the glow of screens and soldering rigs and active data terminals. The darkness between buildings is genuine darkness, not the managed shadow of the upper districts.
Character and community
Ergo Loom's population is the city's most varied below the Zenith line. Academic researchers priced out of corporate institutions. Independent data recovery specialists and Echo analysts. Fabricators working in legacy Precursor-compatible hardware. Street-level Morpheum technicians operating outside Anima Dynamics' licensing framework. Artists who use the district's relative tolerance as cover for work that would not survive scrutiny elsewhere.
The district's grey zone quality is its defining characteristic. Ergo Loom is not lawless. It simply applies its own informal standards of acceptable behaviour, which diverge from both Anima Dynamics' corporate code and the Sleepers' Guild's territorial logic. The Meridian Security Force maintains a nominal presence but treats the district as a low priority. The Guild has interests here but does not dominate it. The result is a district that functions on reputation, relationship, and mutual non-interference.
Strategic significance
Ergo Loom is the primary source of Meridian's independent technical expertise. The specialists who work here operate outside corporate structures by choice and out of necessity. They are the people who can read Precursor-era data architecture, recover corrupted Echo fragments, and build or modify hardware that Anima Dynamics' regulated supply chain does not produce or permit. That expertise makes the district strategically significant to anyone working outside official channels.
The district's address system reflects its organic character. Workshop designations in Ergo Loom often carry informal names rather than the sector codes used in Nexus or Zenith. The Artisan's Coil is one such designation, a workshop complex in Commercial Block 4 whose tenants include some of the district's most sought-after independent technical specialists.

- mainframes // Ghost Signal5. The TechnicianKaelen crosses into Ergo Loom carrying more than a broken data shard, he carries a version of himself he has spent months keeping separate from Sona's world. What he hands her on the workbench is compromised. So is he. Neither of them says so out loud.
- mainframes // Ghost Signal4. The Crime SceneKaelen infiltrates a crime scene at The Docks and finds what the MSF missed, an execution staged to look like gang violence, bearing the unmistakable signature of Anima Dynamics. The symbol on the shipping container is real, proprietary, and from his past.
