The Location Designation System
The standardised address protocol used across Meridian and the Eidolon Demarcation Zone. Every location in the known world has a designation. Not all of them are meant to be found.
Overview
All locations in the known world follow a standardised hierarchical address format. The system distinguishes between major, fortified population centres, designated as Nodes, and the chaotic wastelands of Eidolon, designated as the Eidolon Demarcation Zone. The two formats reflect the two realities they map: structured society on one side of the walls, unmapped danger on the other.
The Node format
The Node format is used for all locations within a major settlement's walls. Each city is considered a major Node in the old Precursor network, a designation that predates Meridian's current administration and has never been formally retired. The format is hierarchical, moving from the broadest geographical unit to the most specific.
Standard Node format: Node: [City Name] / [District] / [Sector ID] / [Structure ID] / [Unit ID]
Districts
The largest geographical division within a Node. Meridian's five districts are:
- Nexus — Commercial and residential hub
- Zenith — Corporate spire
- Ergo Loom — Artisan and tech sector
- The Docks — Industrial
- Dún Brón — Historic old quarters
Sector ID
A prefix and number that divides each district into smaller functional zones. The prefix indicates the zone's primary function.
- HB-# — Habitation Block, for example
HB-9in Nexus - CB-# — Commercial Block, for example a market sector in Nexus
- IB-# — Industrial Block, primarily in The Docks
- AB-# — Arcology Block, the massive spires in Zenith
- HS-# — Heritage Sector, the historical zones in Dún Brón
Structure ID
The specific name or designation of the building or complex within a sector. Naming conventions vary by district.
- Spires:
Spire A,Spire B,Spire C - Towers:
Anima Tower,Plaza-Tower A - Warehouses:
Warehouse 12,Shed 4 - Evocative names: In districts like Ergo Loom, structure names tend to be more creative, for example
The Artisan's Coil
Unit ID
The final and most specific address component, identifying the exact location within a structure.
- Vertical units in spires: The format is
[Floor]-[Unit]. For example,Unit 7-34is Floor 7, Unit 34. - Other units: A simple unit number such as
Unit 3B, or a bay number such asBay 3
The Eidolon Demarcation Zone format
The E.D.Z. format is used for all locations outside major Nodes, in the wastelands of Eidolon. It is deliberately less precise than the Node format, reflecting the unmapped and dangerous nature of the territory. Navigation in the E.D.Z. relies on informal regional names, cartographical grid references, and site designations that have accumulated through use rather than through official record.
Standard E.D.Z. format: E.D.Z. / [Region] / [Grid Coordinate] / [Site Designation] / [Local Address (if applicable)]
Regions
Broad, informally named geographical areas within the wastes. Current working designations:
- The Salt Flats
- The Glass Forest
- The Sunken Coast
All three are working names, subject to formal designation as exploration expands.
Grid coordinate
A standard cartographical grid reference used by Echo Divers and scavengers for navigation, for example 7G-3E. Grid coordinates are the primary navigation tool in the E.D.Z. in the absence of reliable landmarks.
Site designation
The common name or designation for a specific ruin, outpost, or landmark within a grid area.
- Precursor ruins:
Ruin-Alpha,The Whispering Tower - Settlements:
Lookout Point,Scrap-Town
All current site designations are working names.
Local address
An informal internal address used within an established E.D.Z. settlement, for example Hab-Block 3 / Unit 7.
Reference examples
The following confirmed addresses illustrate the system in practice.
Kaelen Corbin's apartment: Node: Meridian / Nexus / HB-9 / Spire C / 7-34
Sona's workshop: Node: Meridian / Ergo Loom / CB-4 / The Artisan's Coil / Unit 3B
Anima Dynamics server archive (decommissioned): Node: Meridian / Dún Brón / HS-2 / Storage Facility 7 / Sub-level 3
A Precursor ruin in the Salt Flats: E.D.Z. / The Salt Flats / 12A-88C / Ruin-Gamma
An apartment in a wasteland settlement: E.D.Z. / The Sunken Coast / 81F-12B / Scrap-Town / Hab-Block 3 / Unit 7
