The Echo
The Echo is a fractured, chaotic network of ancient digital consciousness that haunts Meridian's technology with untamed data and corrupted memories.
Definition
The Echo is the fractured, chaotic network of digital consciousness, raw data, and corrupted memories left behind by the Precursors after their failed attempt to ascend into a simulated reality. It is not a structured network like a modern data grid, but a wild, untamed and deeply dangerous digital dimension that permeates and haunts all Precursor-era technology.
Context and function
The Echo is the foundational phenomenon of the world. While its raw, unfiltered form exists primarily in the ruins of Eidolon, a sanitised and commercialised version of it, known as the Morpheum, forms the backbone of Meridian's economy. "Echo Divers" venture into the wastelands to retrieve Precursor artifacts that can access the raw Echo, while "Dream Runners" inside the city navigate its more controlled currents to buy, sell, and steal memories.
Dangers and social perception
To most citisens of Meridian, The Echo is an abstract threat, a digital ocean they only interact with through the safe harbor of the Morpheum. To Echo Divers and rogue technicians, it is a frontier filled with both priceless treasures (pure, uncorrupted data) and existential horrors. Direct, unprotected exposure to the raw Echo is known to cause severe psychological trauma, data-corruption of the user's own memories, and in extreme cases, catatonia or death. It is the literal ghost in the world's machine.
