The Ascension Coup

Objective

The Ascension Coup is the concealed true agenda of Anima Dynamics, classified above all other internal priorities and known only to the corporation's senior board and select Compliance personnel. Its objective is not to explore The Ark or to join whatever fragments of Precursor consciousness may persist within it. The objective is conquest. Anima intends to find a stable path into The Ark, neutralise any intelligence or system currently governing the simulation, and claim the entire digital environment as corporate property. The scale of what this would mean, control over a self-sustaining digital reality potentially containing the encoded consciousness of an entire civilisation, is the reason the operation is conducted in absolute secrecy.

Commanding faction

Anima Dynamics. The operation is directed from the board level, with the Compliance Division serving as its primary operational instrument. Silas Barrett is the most active field agent involved in the conspiracy's maintenance and protection.

Known events

The Ascension Coup is not a new operation. It has been the underlying purpose of Anima Dynamics' institutional existence for as long as the corporation has known about Morpheum's Gate. Every commercial enterprise Anima conducts, every piece of legislation they have pushed through the city council, every Compliance operation deployed against independent researchers, Echo Divers, or rogue technicians, exists to fund and protect this single agenda.

Every investigation that edges too close to the Coup's existence is treated as an existential threat. Operatives, researchers, and rogue technicians who accumulate too much of the right knowledge are removed through whatever means the Compliance Division considers proportionate. The corporation does not distinguish between the threat of a single investigator and the threat of a faction. Both are managed the same way.

Outcome

Active. The Coup has not achieved its primary objective. No confirmed stable path into The Ark has been established. Anima's position is the strongest of any faction pursuing this goal, but the operation remains incomplete.

Threat level

Critical. The Ascension Coup is the most consequential active operation in the world. Its success would give a single corporation control over a digital reality of unknown scale and capability. Everything else happening in Meridian is, at some level, either a product of this operation or a threat to it.
