Kaelen Corbin
A former top investigator for Anima Dynamics. Loyal only to the memory of his daughter and the truth he seeks.
"The only feeling you can trust is the withdrawal."
Profile
Kaelen Corbin is 54 years old. 184cm, athletic and functional in build, carrying the kind of body that has been maintained out of professional habit rather than vanity. Dark brown hair, thick and well-cut. Three days of stubble as a permanent condition. A symmetrical face with deep blue eyes that carry the weight of a specific, unresolved grief. He moves with the controlled economy of someone who has spent decades reading rooms for threats and has not yet decided the habit is no longer necessary.
His official designation is "information consultant." In practice, he operates as a Dream Runner, navigating the grey market of Meridian's digital underworld, running jobs that require someone with his particular combination of skills: an almost supernatural ability to read people, a relentless investigative instinct, and an Anima Dynamics training that taught him exactly how the machine he now works against is constructed.
History and context
Kaelen was once among Anima Dynamics' most effective investigators, mentoring a generation of Compliance operatives including Silas Barrett. Twelve years ago, the Eidolon Incident ended his career. He was lured to a site in Eidolon under the pretence of a routine field assignment. His twelve-year-old daughter was with him. The unstable Precursor artefact used as the instrument of his elimination did not kill him. It took her instead, and Anima's cover-up assigned the event to his own negligence, destroying his professional reputation and leaving him with corrupted memory loops he cannot stop revisiting.
He believes his daughter is dead. He cannot stop believing she might not be. That contradiction is not a wound he is recovering from. It is the engine he runs on.
The twelve years since have been a slow-motion unravelling that has not yet finished unravelling him. He drinks. He works. He keeps his apartment stripped of personality to the point of hostility, the only exception a single photograph on the table. But he has not stopped. The investigation into what really happened at Eidolon, into the conspiracy beneath it, into the secrets of The Ark that Anima has spent a generation burying, has never closed. It has simply gone quiet. What he is looking for is not justice in any grand sense. It is a personal, desperate truth, and he will burn through whatever is left of himself to reach it.
His core philosophy, earned through whatever the Eidolon Incident cost him: "The only feeling you can trust is the withdrawal."
Methods and capabilities
Under extreme stress, Kaelen does not panic. His training and his trauma have converged on the same response: a sudden, preternatural stillness, gaze unfocused, processing accelerating behind a face that has gone completely neutral. To outside observers, it reads as calm. It is not calm. It is hyper-focus operating at a cost he pays later, when the stillness breaks and the suppressed reaction finds another way out. A subtle, repetitive motion, rubbing a thumb over the scarring on his neural link, is the only visible tell that anything is happening at all.
His neural link is a heavy, older model of brushed steel and hardened rubber, scarred with years of use. He handles it with the familiarity of a soldier checking a rifle. It is a talisman as much as a tool.
His greatest operational liability is also his defining characteristic: he is addicted to reliving the corrupted memory loop of his daughter's disappearance. He tells himself he is analysing it for clues. He is. He is also isolating himself, clouding his judgement, and slowly consuming the part of him that might otherwise know when to stop. He has mistaken obsession for method. The investigation is both his purpose and his slow erasure.
Known associations
Kaelen operates out of The Gilded Cage in Nexus, a black-market dream lounge that functions as both his base and his cover. His relationship with Anya, the establishment's proprietor and Sleepers' Guild operative, is transactional and mutually wary. His professional relationship with Sona, the Echo-Analyst he hires in Ghost Signal, is layered with a protectiveness he cannot explain and she finds baffling. He has no confirmed allies. He has a long list of people who would prefer he remain unable to finish what he has started.
Threat level
Elevated. Kaelen Corbin is not dangerous because he is violent. He is dangerous because he is still looking, and he is very good at finding things that were carefully hidden.
